Fasteners not to scale
Hi All,

I have come across this before and always just made do. Why are bolts from tools-fasteners not to scale? I have a M24 bolt that measures 24.84mm dia.
Am I missing something?

KC2012 v11.3.1

Thanks,
Alan

RE:Fasteners not to scale

That is strange... but there isa lot of strangeness in the feature and fastener stuff in KC... that Kubotek has never deemed worth fixing.

Those dimensions are in C:\Program Files\Kubotek\KeyCreatorPro.2021.SP0\Lang\English\FastData\ANSI_M\BOLTHEX.csv (your folder will be different), which you can edit yourself if you like.

RE:Fasteners not to scale
I have been complaining for a long long time about the " Features/Fasteners"     it goes virtually no where .  its a shame such a good  CAD package is so horrible in this aspect . I would think there is a lot of users that use this that would greatly appreciate a better way !!!    if any of you have seen the way XMD ( which runs in KC ) handles fasteners you would realize how Dark Ages this old Draft Pak stuff is .         PLEASE PLEASE fix this old stuff

RE:Fasteners not to scale
If memory serves, the fasteners are drawn at whatever the standard says is the maximum diameter, which is a bit more than the name of the fastener would suggest.

RE:Fasteners not to scale
Mark, that was my first thought too. The numbers in our fastener database intentionally cause fasteners to be created at maximum size. In this case the code seems to be working correctly.

In some cases tolerances do allow for the maximum dia to be larger than the nominal diameter. The example Alan gave above does not seem to be covered by that case. I've filed a bug so that we review the data files. It looks to me like there may be a problem.

Thanks for all the replies. It would be great if KC could fix this.

RE:Fasteners not to scale
Some additonal feedback from users on this specific issue would be helpful.

What we've uncovered so far is that KeyCreator's database does have the correct diamater values in this case (see https://www.fasteners.eu/standards/DIN/601/ ) One column in our data is nominal diameter (24mm) and another is maximum SHAFT diameter (24.84mm) which is not listed in most on-line sources. KeyCreator currently defaults to use the maximum shaft diameter data. If that column (E) is removed from the CSV file, KeyCreator will use the nominal diameter.

The reasoning to default to the maximum shaft diameter is to help prevent interference with clearance holes.

What problem(s) are you running into with fasteners which are created at the maximum shaft diameter?

RE:Fasteners not to scale

I feel like this question has been raised before, a similiar discussion had, and the current  behavior explained. I would hate this to get dropped before we get to the useful part of determining what the problem is.

If adding an option switch to use nominal diameter would solve a problem, we can do that.

RE:Fasteners not to scale
Hi Jim,

I have edited some the the csv columns on the most common fastners I use and that works great.

I have always used the nominal fastner dimension and adjusted the hole to suit and never had a problem.

I think your idea of having an option switch with the default being the nomnal dia. and th option being the max dia. would be great.

Thanks,

Alan

RE:Fasteners not to scale
Alan,

Thanks for bringing this up and helping us understand the issue. I've put a request in to have that switch added. This will hopefully help other users understand the behavior and easily get nominal shaft diameter without needing to edit CSV files.

For any other users still reading this thread, please know that Kubotek highly values your time. Our KeyCreator business is based on your productivity. Putting your time into posting here to point out problems you are having with KeyCreator is appreciated. Getting problem details directly from users is the best way to improve the product.

Thanks again.
