New to KC
I'm new to KC and looking for fundamental tutorials that don't assume I know anything.

I've done solid modeling for 20 years using Vellum Solids, Ashlar Xenon, TC Pro Mac, and Shark FX. All on Mac and all self-taught with very intuitive software with good help/user guides when needed. However, those programs work very differently. I needed more capable software and took time to learn about direct modeling and KC.

I'm not too proud to say KC is kicking my butt right now. As I proceed with the Kubotek tutorials I find omissions and errors that have me starting over repeatedly until I realize it's not me, it's the tutorial that's missing steps, usually very simple steps that make me feel dumb when I figure out what went wrong.

I prefer to start at the very beginning with 2D and go from there. I don't need razzle-dazzle. I'm sold on KC, I need to learn the basics. More 2D tutorials would be helpful. Some of what I'm seeing appears overly-complicated, but I want to believe there will be advantages in the long run to this way of doing things.

Some of what I've done, and will continue to be working on can be seen here:https://sites.google.com/site/hybridaxialfluxmachines/

I can't show the bulk of the work publicly yet but some of it's getting interesting.

Anyone familiar with designing parts / tooling for thermoset plastics? With FEA for electromagnetics? Powdered metal parts?

I feel like a piano player that picked up a saxophone. Any assistance or pointers that can help get me up to speed with KC will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Steve

RE:New to KC
Steve,
Welcome aboard!  KC (starting with Cadkey) has been my secret weapon since 1985.
I run KC on parallels on a macbook pro with or without an external monitor.

Is there any way you can get some into one of Walt Silva's classes?   Get in touch with him - he will know how to help you in the most direct way.  On the Kubotek web page goto store (top banner) & training classes.

Hope that helps.
Your pump designs look very cool!

All the best,

RE:New to KC

Mike,

Thanks! How is Parallels working for you? It limited the amount of RAM I could use unless I bought the premium version. I was running into other troubles with my backups slowing things down so jumped ship. It would be handy to have my Mac OS and Windows software available at the same time, especially when it comes to tranferring files from my old CAD to KC.

I'd prefer a good user guide and tutorials that I can refer to at any time since questions pop up pretty much at any time.

In addition to wanting to get the basics, I'm trying to import my old files and work with them. Currently unable to remove a few features or even modify the colors on some parts. I tried various maintenance commands to no avail. Do you have any ideas I might try?

Thanks,

Steve

RE:New to KC
Steve,

It is the pro version I am running.  KC seems to run nicely on lower memory machines; just try different video settings as those make a huge difference.

Tools/ Face tools/ Change color/ Reset bodies to one solid color.  That should let you change colors.

Technical support is a good resource for helping with errant files.  New copies of KC are usually sold with maintenance.

Failing that feel free to email me a file (and others in the community will likely offer the same) and I will try to conform it.

All the best,
Mike

RE:New to KC
Mike,

Do you use Time Machine for backups? Any issues there?

Thanks for the tip. Face tools moved and changed. I found it under Edit / Entities / Set Materials Rendering Properties, and it worked.

Odd how Change Attributes worked for most parts, but that one part wouldn't take until I used the Set Materials Rendering Properties.

BTW, I found I can leave a message for support on this forum where it says "Questions? Chat live with us, We are online - chat with us." No one was online, but I was able to leave a message and a response came maybe within the hour. That was helpful, but by the time it came I had found what I was looking for. Still, I plan to use this.

Thanks for the offer for help with my files. I have a large assembly I'm bringing over to KC and learning as I go. I think I'm going to have to rebuild some things from scratch as the geometry isn't up to snuff on some of it.

All the best,

Steve

RE:New to KC
Haven't used time machine although thinking about it.  Mostly using DropBox and a small external hard drive.

You may not have to rebuild parts from scratch.  There are many ways to fix bad geometry.

KC support is pretty good.  You can also call in if you are in a hurry.

RE:New to KC

I've been using Time Machine since it first came out. It's been great for me. I have also been using SugarSync to keeep data off-site in a cloud. I may drop SugarSync since it can take up a lot of resources, but mostly it does it's job without me being aware of it. When I was testing Parallels with KC it was acting up. Going straight Boot Camp solved that.

I did send an errant file to tech support. I was trying to remove a few features that wouldn't go away. Support told me it had some bad geometry and offered a Go To Meeting with me. I postponed that to give myself more time to learn basics so a meeting would be more productive.

My time with KC comes in spurts.

RE:New to KC
Been with Cadkey since the DOS version (6.2 I think??).  Anyway have been with CK19 since it came out but the new Windows doesn't like it much so bought seats ti KC a couple of years ago.  Been tool busy with CK19 to learn KC but now have set it up and am doing some 2D/3D drawings and love the power.

One question:  The old Cadkey had a function called "Refresh".  It was on the "Seettings - View" drop down.  Is there any such function in Keycreator 2019 SP3??

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

RE:New to KC
Hey Mike,

I MAY be the LAST student taking the LAST KC instructional class from Dr. Walt. That happened back in Dec 2017 at his place in W. Orange, NJ. (right in your neck of the woods) I consider myself to be among the lucky ones to have met with the master and sat at his knee for instruction.

Dr. Walt has written MANY books on the subject of using KeyCreator and his writings are, in my estimation, top drawer. But my visit back in 2017 gave me the impression that he was finished with the KeyCreator instruction/book publishing business, having just finished 'Doctor Walt's KeyCreator Desk Reference', a 296 pg. Perfect Bound version of his "Greatest Hits, as it were.

It MAY be possible to coax him out of retirement but I cannot speak for him. In the alternative, he is the author, creator, and producer of the several hundred tutorials listed in KubotekUniversity. These are static as well as video renditions of the various subject matter as found in his many publications. They are short (no more than 4-5 minutes long) videos that use the time honored military approach to training, "tell 'em what you are gonna tell 'em, tell 'em, then tell 'em what you told 'em." I have all of them ensconced on my iMac and they are just like having him in the room with you-including a few snarky jokes.

I tried to download one tonight just to see if they would still work but Kubotek seems to have them in a different file format and the download takes forever with the 'converting' function needing to run. Contact me at my eMail dubledeuce@earthlink.net and I might be able to help.

RE:New to KC
Hello Steve,

Welcome on the forum! I've been using Keycreator/Cadkey since the mid '90s. I think you made the right choice going with KC.

As for gettin tutorials I would suggest you buying a few books from KC guru Doc Walt's at
https://www.docwalt.com/keycreator-books.html.
I've bought a few myself.

In the meantime if you need more information on how to use some functions, I wouls suggest you to post request on the forum or send me directly the request by email.
