STL import
Hi All,
I am looking for some advice on importing and working with STL files created from a 3D scanner.
I have tried some of the STL import options - unfilled polylines seems to import the best. What is the procedure to make the imported STL file into a usable part / solid.
Thanks in advance,

RE:STL import
Hi Alan,
There is a program on Transmagic.com that claims to make good conversions from polygon models to cad formats.
It has a 90 day free trial period. Here is a link to an article on this:
https://transmagic.com/dealing-with-polygons-in-a-cad-world/
I have not used it as of yet but hopefully it will help you.
Alll the best,
Mike

RE:STL import
I believe Mike's suggestion is a good direction if you are looking for automatic conversion. That program is not inexpensive. I'm not aware of low cost tools that do this conversion well (If anyone is, please share).
If the scanned parts are moslty flat surfaces, cylindrical faces, and constant radius blends there are solids simplify and face removal techniques in KeyCreator to save some time over starting over from scratch. Otherwise you'll need to slice the polygon model with planes and generate best fit curves to use for manual re-building.
The problem here is that triangle formats like STL are just an approximation of the model. If you need precision, there is a lot of work to do to get back to it.

RE:STL import
I didn't read Mike's post carefully enough earlier - I thought he was bringing up Geomagic from 3D Systems. That is the program that is expensive but really works. It usually comes up in these conversations.
From the blog posts I see from Transmagic (no relation), it does not seem to do much more than the option in KeyCreator to import an STL as Solid Bodies.
