Hi Nathan,
You have a lot of flexibility in how individual parts are rendered within the same drawing. Assembly files are not necessary for this.
1. In the menu bar select "Edit"/ "Edit" and a properties panel will appear. Select "Rendering". You can select for any part how you wish it rendered. You can mix solid wireframe, shaded solid, tranparent solid, etc. You can even set certain bumpmap graphical properities such as diamond-plate and others.
2. Fifth tab over in the layers panel is "Materials". Drag and drop a transparent block onto the part you wish to affect.
