RE:Are they finally serious about "interoperability"?
Market leaders in the Cad field have a significanly investment in the 'tree' system. As such it doesn't do thier marketing team a great deal of good the hear ANYTHING about the advantages of direct modeling. Big corp LIKES to be sold on BIG ideas. "More be better" is the prevailing theme. Also, treee based software keeps the management in the loop of design by artificially setting up operational barriers to anyone attempting to make radical changes to the model. To make a SIGNIFICANT change to any model without the OK and or acquiencennce of management is blasphemous.
Couple the investment, the tie in of the Keys to the Kingdom, and the long established NIH (not invented here) syndrom and you have an industry locked into its own demise-demise here being the inability to dominate the market by product inovation.
Now comes this "Industry Collabration" called "Interoperbility" (didn't I see that term on an old CADKEY 19 box once?) dressed up as the lastest industry buzz word and all iI see is a thicker layer of code overwritten onto the collaborators product to devise some inter-corporate method to 'standardize" the bidniz-THEIR bidniz.
I think Key Creator had the right product but they for SOME reason do not have the keys to the marketing lock to give them more exposure. Time and again I have been in mixed company and raised the conversation of using KEYCreator and all I get are dumb stares.
After an explaination I get a polite 'Whatever" and the conversation goes back to Solid Works or AutoDesk and their established standards. The standards DO NOT belong to them save for the fact that the arrogance of these manufactures permits them to call a standard like AutoCAD DXF and AutoCAD DWG.
If this standards business is to have any legs I think Kubotek needs to up their exposure in the field of product placement. Start young and get them started on the silplicity of the concept then let the other guys play catch up ball as to wanting to complicate the system with THEIR standard.
Leadership gentlemen, taht is the secret.
As usual, CADFuzed.
